What to pack for Thailand
Depending on your nationality, you'll need a valid passport and may also need visas to enter. Please check this well in advance of your trip departure date on our Frequently Asked Questions. Some countries also require passports to have 3-6 months left on them before the given expiry date, so be sure to double check this before booking your travels.
Thailand uses the Thai baht (THB, ฿).
Thailand is known for its temples, tropical beaches, vibrant street food, and warm hospitality. Highlights include Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and the ancient ruins of Ayutthaya. Thai massage and night markets are also iconic experiences.
Tipping isn’t required, but it’s appreciated in tourist areas. In restaurants, rounding up or leaving small change is common. For exceptional service, 10% is generous. Tip hotel staff, drivers, and guides as you feel appropriate.
Citizens of many countries, including the US, UK, and much of Europe, can enter Thailand visa-free for up to 30 days. Longer stays or multiple entries may require a visa. Always confirm current requirements before travel.
The cool, dry season (November to February) is the most popular time to visit Thailand. It’s ideal for beach vacations and sightseeing. March to May is hot, and June to October brings the rainy season—lush and quieter.
Thailand has a tropical climate with three seasons: hot, rainy, and cool. Coastal areas are humid year-round. Rainy season (June–October) means afternoon downpours, while November to February offers the most pleasant temperatures.
Thailand uses plug types A, B, and C, with a voltage of 220V and frequency of 50Hz. Travelers from the UK and Europe will need an adapter; US visitors may only need one for grounding. Check device voltage compatibility.
ATMs are easy to find in urban and tourist areas. Most accept international cards, though a small withdrawal fee is common. Credit cards are accepted in many places, but cash is preferred at markets and street vendors.
Tap water in Thailand is not safe to drink. Always use bottled water for drinking and brushing your teeth. Filtered water is common in hotels, and you can buy bottled water at convenience stores everywhere.
Lightweight, breathable clothes are best for Thailand’s heat and humidity. Pack modest clothing for temples, a swimsuit, insect repellent, sunscreen, and sandals. A rain jacket or umbrella is useful during monsoon season.

Thailand is known for dishes like pad Thai, green curry, mango sticky rice, and tom yum soup. Street food is legendary—don’t miss satay skewers, roti, or fresh fruit smoothies. Spicy, sweet, sour, and salty all come together in Thai cuisine.

Dress light for the heat, but modestly for temples—shoulders and knees should be covered. Loose, breathable clothes, sandals, and a hat are ideal for the climate. Bring a shawl or scarf for extra coverage where needed.
