Travel guide

Psychedelic coral swaying beneath turquoise waters and silky beaches with pink, white and black sands. Tropical wildlife and smouldering volcanoes rimmed by lush rainforests. If Mother Nature has ever shown off, it’s in Hawaii. The locals know they’re living in paradise, with aloha ʻaina (love for the land) coursing through their culture. And when you take a Hawaii holiday with Trafalgar, you too will fall in love with this land. Learn to ‘wave slide’ in Waikiki, snorkel with sea turtles, and see the bubbling volcanoes on the Big Island. Discover the vibrant multiculturalism of the islands, as we take you from a sustainable local farm to a traditional Polynesian performance in Maui, or from a Pearl Harbor memorial to the gleaming Kona Hawaii Temple. Hawaii is the perfect place to kick off your shoes and let the aloha wash over you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hawaii is part of the United States, so the same visa requirements apply as for any other US destination. Travelers from the EU, UK, Canada, and Australia can visit visa-free for up to 90 days under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), but they must apply for ESTA authorization before departure. Travelers from other countries should check on the US Government Website for visa requirements.

Hawaii is a year-round destination, thanks to its mild climate. However, the best time to visit is from April to June or September to November when the weather is still amazing, and crowds are thinner. Winter (December to March) brings bigger surf to the north shore, making it ideal for surfing enthusiasts, while summer (June to August) is the peak long, languid days and almost perfect weather every day. However, it can be crowded with tourists, especially in popular spots like Waikiki.

Hawaii has a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round. Coastal areas typically stay between 21°C (70°F) and 29°C (85°F), with some humidity. The islands’ mountainous regions can experience cooler temperatures and even snow on the highest peaks during winter. Rainfall is more common in the winter months, especially on the windward sides of the islands, while summer tends to be drier.

Hawaii uses the US dollar (USD). Credit cards are widely accepted, but it's a good idea to carry cash for smaller purchases or tips. ATMs are available on all islands, and currency exchange services are offered at the airport.

Tipping is customary in Hawaii, just like the mainland US. For restaurant service, tip around 15-20%. For taxi rides, round up to the nearest dollar or give a 10-15% tip. Hotel staff, such as housekeepers and bellhops, typically receive $1-$2 per service. It's always appreciated to show gratitude for good service.

ATMs are widely available across all islands, including in hotels, shopping centers, and major tourist areas. Most international cards are accepted, but be aware of potential transaction fees. Always check with your bank for the best withdrawal options to avoid high fees.

Yes, tap water in Hawaii is safe to drink and meets high-quality standards. The islands have strict water regulations to ensure cleanliness. Many restaurants and hotels offer tap water free of charge, and it's common for locals to refill their water bottles from public fountains or sinks.

Pack lightweight clothing for warm weather, including swimsuits, shorts, T-shirts, and sun protection gear like hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Comfortable walking shoes are a must for exploring, and if you plan on hiking, bring sturdy footwear. A light jacket is helpful for cooler evenings or if you visit higher altitudes. Don’t forget a reusable water bottle, camera, and waterproof gear if you're heading to beaches or waterfalls.

A 7-day trip is definitely enough for exploring one or two islands, enjoying both popular tourist spots and quieter areas. But if you want to really settle into the laid-back Hawaiian way of life, a 10-14 day trip would give you more time to truly unplug, as well as explore multiple islands and dive into local culture, adventure activities, and nature.

We highly recommend guests purchase travel insurance prior to your trip. Please ensure you add the details of your insurance to the MyTrafalgar portal.  Your insurance should cover trip interruption, personal injury, medical expenses, and evacuation and repatriation cover including during pandemic events.  Book your travel insurance with Trafalgar's Travel Protection Plan, which includes the Cancel For Any Reason Credit Certificate Feature and the Travel Insurance Benefits that may help to protect your vacation payment against the unexpected.

Trafalgar Tours Limited is a proud member of The Travel Corporation family of companies.
