Our top 5 things to do in Mykonos

Best museums in Mykonos

While Mykonos holidays could be spent simply soaking up the sun, a visit to the museums of the island will enhance your visit to this intriguing island, from its maritime past to ancient relics.

Best food in Mykonos

Greek food brimming with all the best bits of the Mediterranean diet, with lashings of olive oil, plenty of herbs, fresh seafood and locally-grown fruits and vegetables – not forgetting the addition of grilled meats and delicious cheeses.

What to pack for Mykonos

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

Breathable clothing

Mykonos can get hot, so wear light, breathable fabrics to help keep you cool in the heat – linen is something of a staple in Mykonos, ticking both form and function.

Something stylish

Mykonos has a high-end side, so when you head out for that sunset cocktail don’t be afraid to wear something a little more stylish! You’ll fit right in.

Comfortable shoes

Cobblestone streets, sea-splashed pavements and island hills make for a beautiful scene – but you’ll need a good pair of shoes while exploring Mykonos.

Wide-brimmed hat

The Greek sun can get pretty strong – if you’re exploring in the midday sun then pack a wide-brimmed hat to protect yourself from the rays (and look good while doing it).

Wrap for cooler evenings

The famous Meltemi winds keep Mykonos cool and breezy during the day, but does mean the evenings can get a little chilly. Carry a shawl or light sweater to take with you during your evening activities.

Mykonos Travel FAQs

Mykonos is best visited between May and October, when rainfall is low and the sun is shining – the peak summer season in July and August will be busiest with visitors, so if you prefer it slightly quieter and cooler then visit Mykonos in the shoulder seasons during spring and fall.

During July and August, summer sees almost no rainfall and temperatures are warm, averaging around 28ºC. Fall cools down to around 23ºC during September and October, similarly to spring during May and June – neither of these seasons are particularly rainy. Winter is the off season, so not much will be open and the weather is colder and wet.

Mykonos uses the same currency as the rest of Greece, the official currency of Europe, the Euro (€).

When you travel to Mykonos you can use two associated plug types: type C (two round parallel pins) and type F (two round parallel pins and one hole above them) at 230V.

Similar to much of Europe, tipping in Mykonos is customary but not mandatory – if you experience good service a tip of 5-10% is appreciated when dining out at restaurants. On your tour to Mykonos with Trafalgar, certain tips and gratuities for you such as baggage handling at hotels, service charges and tips for hotel wait staff (for included meals).

On trips to Mykonos, a few days is enough to discover this Greek island. Our Greek Island Hopper tour gives you three nights in Mykonos, which allows you to explore not just the island but nearby sites like the island of Delos.

You can simply stroll through the winding, cobbled streets of Mykonos town (Chora) and Little Venice and you’ll have a great time. As for free sites, you can see the windmills, relax on public beaches (Paradise, Elia, and Megali Ammos are popular), and head to Agios Ioannis beach to watch the sunset.

We highly recommend guests purchase travel insurance prior to your trip. Please ensure you add the details of your insurance to the MyTrafalgar portal.

Your insurance should cover trip interruption, personal injury, medical expenses, and evacuation and repatriation cover including during pandemic events.
