Built across 14 islands, Stockholm is one of Europe’s cleanest, most polite and least frenetic capital cities. Parks and woodlands make up a third of the city, and reflections of elegant buildings, wide boulevards and rows of houseboats shimmer as you tour the sights. Let our Local Specialists show you round the multicoloured medieval Old Town of Gamla Stan; the City Hall, where Nobel Prize banquets are held; the Royal Palace; and Riddarholm Church, where the Swedish monarchs are buried. There's plenty more to explore too – find the central Kungstradgarden park in the wealthy district of Norrmalm. Or browse the bohemian shops and art galleries of Sodermalm, as well as the trendy SoFo and Kungsholmen areas.
Designed by the Dutch in 1621, Scandinavia's biggest seaport is an attractive city of stately Neoclassical architecture, canals, parks and impressive food markets. On a fine day, stroll the Tradgardsforeningen Park or the verdant Kungsparken, or take a boat trip on the Gota river. Alternatively, visit one of the city’s museums - as well as the Konstmuseum of art and the Naturhistoriska Museet of natural history, there's the Maritiman, a floating museum consisting of 19 vessels.
Sweden's sparsely populated, deeply forested far north is home to rugged national parks and the Sami nomads. Many Sami are skilled craftspeople and the Winter Market at Jokkmokk, just north of the Arctic Circle, attracts thousands of people each year to buy everything from reindeer hide to wellington boots.
