Whether it’s asking for directions, ordering lunch or making friends with locals, it’s always handy (and polite) to have a phrasebook on your Berlin tour.

Good shoes

Berlin is an incredibly walkable city, and for that you’ll need a good pair of sturdy, comfortable shoes – lightweight in the summer and waterproof in the winter.

Swimming gear

Berlin has plenty of lakes you can dive into, so make sure you pack your swimsuits in case you want to experience the city’s lakeside charm.

Camera

Go bonkers for Bauhaus or got a passion for Modernism? Capture Berlin’s unique architecture and street art on camera – you’ll find captivating scenes around every corner.

Seasonal clothing

Berlin is very warm and dry in the summer, becoming wet and cold in the winter – research before you go, and come prepared with either raincoats or sun hats.

Berlin Frequently Asked Questions

Summer is the best time to explore Berlin with long days and warm weather – it’s when festival season kicks off and the city’s many green spaces come alive as people embrace al fresco living. Winter brings traditional Christmas markets and festive cheer, while shoulder seasons spring and fall offer a quieter time to experience the city more like a local, avoiding the weather extremes of summer and winter.

The weather is best in Berlin during late spring and summer, with long days full of sunshine, with summer temperatures getting up to 30ºC/86ºF. Fall is still dry but considerably cooler, dropping to around 15ºC/59ºF, while winters can be drizzly and very cold, with temperatures hovering around freezing for most of the season.

Berlin uses the same currency as the rest of Germany, the official currency of Europe, the Euro (€).

When you travel to Berlin you can use two associated plug types: type C (two round parallel pins) and type F (two round parallel pins and one hole above them) at 230V.

As in much of Europe, tipping in Berlin is customary but not mandatory – if you experience good service a tip of around 10% is appreciated when dining out at restaurants. On your tour to Berlin with Trafalgar, tips and gratuities are included as part of your tour price and taken care of by your Travel Director for anything included as part of your tour experience.

Around three days in Berlin is long enough to get a feel for the city and explore plenty of it; on a tour to Berlin with Trafalgar, you’ll generally stay here for two nights with lots of activities available for you to get stuck into.

We highly recommend guests purchase travel insurance prior to your trip to Berlin. Please ensure you add the details of your insurance to the MyTrafalgar portal. Your insurance should cover trip interruption, personal injury, medical expenses, and evacuation and repatriation cover including during pandemic events.
