The itinerary covered a lot of Britain and Ireland. I felt that perhaps it tried to visit too many places. I did realize when booking the trip that it was 21 days, that it mean't full days. I have done many trips with Trafalgar and know the routine. However, this was the longest bus tour that I have done. I have recommended Trafalgar to many people as I have enjoyed all of my trips, and will likely take more.
I really enjoyed the tour. The Tour Director ************ was excellent as were both of the drivers Martin and Karl. The hotels were very nice. When visiting Edinburgh we had to stay out at Peebles. This was about a 45 minute drive and going back and forth as we had to do twice, I found we could have used that time to have seen more of Edinburgh. It was explained that hotel accommodation for our big group of 50 was hard to book, especially when the Edinburgh Tattoo was on. A hotel somewhat closer to Edinburgh would be better. A lot of travelling back and forth. The food in the hotels was very good. Everyone was very friendly. I found that at some of the places we stopped, for lunch and to sightsee, we did not have a lot of time to do both. A real busy trip. We covered a lot of Britain and Ireland and I am pleased that I did it.
I have mentioned several of the hotels in part 1, and as a company you should be ashamed to declare that you hand picked those hotels which were substandard or too remote. The Peebles Hotel has been used previously by your tours, on Steves admission. So it isn't a one off time wasting exercise, it's happened before. While the coach was clean and well maintained, it lacked a lot in personal comfort. The relief bus we had was far more comfortable and spacious. The greatest stuff up of the trip was in Edinburgh at the Castle, when the voucher provided by the office to Steve for our groups castle tour, was an expired voucher used 3 weeks prior. NOT GOOD ENOUGH - AT ALL.Then for the office not to be contactable, or able to resolve the issue was a disgrace, What free time we were to have (considering our remote Peebles location for the hotel) was wasted in a huddle at the castle entrance. Generally the itinerary was very good, but there was a definite need to spend more time in Bath. Once we had finished exploring the Roman Baths there was little time to visit any other spots. As a result we didn't see the circus or any of the city in that direction. To add insult to injury, we arrived at the hotel in Plymouth with a couple of hours to either stare at the hotel walls or visit the local area. The Copthorne Hotel was too distant from any of the major spots of interest in Plymouth. A twenty day tour should be rated so that the passengers are aware of the travel and activity required. Tours should be restricted to fit, active passengers. Our tour catered for the moaners, who wanted to rest in the hotel. Those who were genuine sightseers were hampered. It seems that anyone too old for Contiki is deemed suitable for Trafalgar. There should be tours for those with limited mobility, limited staying power and the inability to get up in the morning. We never once left on time. Each time we stopped the bus it took between 5 and 10 minutes before everyone was off the bus. Was particularly disappointed that the sing along we had "Ferry cross the Mersey" on our approach to Liverpool was cut short due to one couple complaining. The moaners always won out. Steve tried his best, but when there is too great an age/ ability gap it was too difficult. The following week when my husband and i had a hire car we were able to visit so many more places. The only advantage with the coach was the height of the seats, when occasionally you could see over the roadside hedges. When it comes to a rating survey, you might need to add extra criteria. This survey is not really designed for any criticism, just back slapping.
Some of the hotels selected were of great value. Most of the attractions/sights visited were very interesting. The guide offered us invaluable information and insights into the areas we traveled through. The driver was very competent and courteous. The concierge Brendan, at Jurys Inn in Leeds was extremely helpful and went above and beyond to ensure that my needs were catered for. Rachel (night manager and breakfast co-ordinator) was very efficient and ensured smooth operations. While the Peebles hotel was acceptable quality the distance from Edinburgh wasted valuable sightseeing hours. The expected hours to explore Edinburgh were spent commuting to and fro. When people asked what we saw/visited in Edinburgh, we say the inside of the bus. Totally unacceptable. Although the hotel at Gairloch was lovely, that was another 3 hours wasted. We were particularly disappointed that this wasted time, meant we arrived in Glascow in the dark and left the following morning early. This was the city where my husbands grandparents had lived. There was no time to experience the city at all. The Park Inn at Cardiff was a disgrace. The rooms were spartan, the breakfast was in confused disarray. There was insufficient staff, such that our luggage was not loaded on the bus until half an hour after scheduled time. People were concerned that their luggage would be mistakenly put on the other Trafalgar tour coach leaving at the same time.
This trip was one of the best trips we have done few small issues but your on holidays Stev our tour director was great and karl our bus driver top bloke great driver we also made so amazing friendships One thing this trip is NOT for people who wants to just sit and relax
Itinerary was well planned and time frames were manageable. Optional tours were sometimes rushed but interesting. Coach was comfortable and the driver was excellent in handling the coach in tight quarters. Hotels need to be re-evaluated most small and cramped. All breakfast meals were exactly the same and became tiresome very quickly. Lunch and dinner meals were good. The travel director was exceptional. He had to deal with a couple of very obnoxious women on our trip and with some very rude people. I would not want to have his position in having to del with these people. He did a wonderful job, my hats off to Steve.

What is an Active Trip? This is an "Active" lifestyle itinerary, with walks and hikes most days. Hikes will range from easy/moderate to strenuous. No technical climbing skills are required but a reasonable level of fitness is required to make the trip more enjoyable. Understanding that not all people want to hike at the same pace or even on the same trail we will, where possible, host map orientation and then let everyone disperse to enjoy the trails best suited to them.
What to Pack Guests should bring lightweight hiking shoes or boots, broad brimmed sun hats, sunglasses, layered clothing, reusable water bottle(s), a hiking day pack and hiking poles (optional)
Weather & Altitude While the itinerary is laid out below, we are at the mercy of the weather and so reserve the right to adjust the program as necessary. Please keep in mind that the higher elevations and possible variations in weather and temperature can increase the perceived level of difficulty of our activities. Elevation ranges up to 9,000 feet for Utah’s Mighty Five and up to 11,000 feet for California High Country Adventure.
Everyone reacts differently to altitude and so if you do have any health issues you should check with your doctor that this trip is suitable for you.
